Cheppudira Arun Machaiah
Cheppudira Arun Machaiah born on 23rd July, 1955 is an ex-MLC of Kodagu, Karate master, President of the Coorg Orange grower’s society and a social worker. On the political front, he joined Congress in 1979 as a Youth Congress member with a sole dream to improve Kodagu and the quality of life for the people of Kodagu, eventually the betterment of Karnataka.

Career
- He joined Congress in 1979 as a Youth Congress member with a sole dream to improve Kodagu and the quality of life for the people of Kodagu, eventually the betterment of Karnataka.
- In 1992 he was elected as the Kodagu district Youth Congress President. Ever since, Mr Arun Machaiah has contributed to the development of health, education, sports, infrastructure and agriculture in Kodagu/Karnataka in a number of ways.
- In 2004 the people of Kodagu elected him as the Member of the Karnataka State Legislative Council (MLC).
Achievements
- As an Independent MLC, he got funds sanctioned for 23 Bridges in the District.
- Sanctioned Pre-metric tribal hostel and Post-metric Ladies hostel
- Sanctioned Judicial Court in Ponnampet, and Virajpet Taluk
- Grant to the Sainik School in Koodige.
- Sanctioned the first ever Sports Hostel managed and maintained by the Zillah Panchayath, many youngsters have benefitted from this participating in sports at state and national levels.
- Sanctioned five Pre-University Colleges
- Sanctioned eight high schools
- Sanctioned the Senior Grade College in Virajpet
- Up gradation of Polytechnic College to Engineering College at Kushalnagar
- Sanctioned Fire Brigade Unit to Virajpet Taluk
- Effectively implemented all Govt. schemes to needy people of the society- More than 50 water supply schemes
- Distributed thousands of ration cards to the needy
- Hundreds of open well were dug for drinking water.
- Constructed check dams and vented dams for water streams in the water conservation program through the irrigation department.
- Sanctioned many rural roads-interconnecting villages
- Re-opened a sick Industry, The Coorg Orange Growers Co-Operative Society Ltd., Gonikoppal creating employment to the rural women.
- He Served as President of the society for 15 years.
- Opened fare price shops for the public distribution system for BPL and APL card holders.
- Constructed low costing houses for the poor.
- Took the initiative to fight against the implementation of the Kasthuri Rangan Report, toured the district educating people on the hazardous effect the project would have on the permanent inhabitants of private land.
- Sanctioned 18 Medical centre buildings at the cost of 7.50 lakhs each through Karnataka Health System project
- Constructed 20 mini Stadium for youth development at the cost of 1 lakh each.
- Took a primary role in the completion of the Karnataka Health system development Program in the district opening fully fledged community health centres and units
- Conducted 3 medical health camps with free treatment, free surgery and medicines and more than 20,000 people were benefited.
- Free physical fitness training for the youth preparing them to join the armed and Paramilitary forces. More than 400 were recruited and are serving in the defence and Paramilitary forces benefiting from the training.
- Actively involved in the Nehru Yuvaka Kendra holding the Presidentship of the district youth federation for the last 10 years.
- Successfully implemented the watershed program digging about a hundred water tanks.
- He worked for the tribal re-settlement and upliftment. Also fought for the tribal rights in the reserved forests of Karnataka by implementing the ‘Forest dwellers and settlers act of 2006’
- He succeeded in passing the tribal rights bill in the parliament were more than 50,000 tribal families in the reserved forests of Karnataka have benefited from the bill. More than 20,000 people have benefited in Kodagu District alone.
- Formation of about 20 colonies to help settle the homeless providing them with houses, drinking water, sanitary, electricity, Anganwadi and school facilities.
- Organised the first ever mass marriage program in the district were 96 couple were benefited
- Organised hockey and athletics coaching camp under the youth activity program where youth were trained by national coaches.
- Successfully organized yearly blood donation camp for the last 5 years where hundreds of bottles of blood were donated to the Government hospitals in Mysore.
- Implemented Ambulance services to all the Government hospitals in the district to help the rural poor.
- Sanctioned the first ever mobile hospital in the district that has benefited the tribal people
- Karate Training to build youth branches in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.
- Introduced N.S.U.I in all the colleges of the district after successfully winning the student Union Elections in 1996.
- He took the leadership to stop the hazardous mini Hydel electricity projects such as Barapole, Abbey and Irpu which would have resulted in thousands of hectors of land being submerged.
- Sports achievement.
- He was the first National Karate Champion.
- He has represented India in the Asian Karate Championship in Indonesia, Singapore and Nepal.
- Represented the World Karate Championship in Mexico, Tokyo, Beijing, China and the Asia Pacific Karate Championship in Melbourne, Australia.
- In 2003 he was appointed as the Director of the World Shito-Ryu Karate Federation.
- He won a bronze medal for India in the Asian Championship in Singapore.
- In 2009 he was elected as the President of the Karnataka State Karate Association.
- He passed on his expertise in Karate to youngsters through his Karate training classes in Kodagu and other states in India
Awards
- Recipient of the UNICEF Award in 2005 for his work in serving the rural women and children
- He was also awarded as the best fighter in the Asian Championship in Malaysia.
