Channira/Chennira okka
About the okka
It is said that an early ancestor of Channira/Chennira okka was called Chenni, hence their name is Chennira.
They do not know where they came from. Long ago, they had an ainmane in Panḍot, about 2 kms to the west of Nangala. When many in the okka and village died in the plague epidemic of the mid 1880s the few members of the Chennira okka who survived the epidemic, vacated the house and left the village, along with the survivors of the Chottemanḍa, Guḍḍanḍa and Boppanḍa okkas. All the survivors stayed together for some time in Paḷeyamane thare at the top of the slope, and cultivated their fields. When their numbers increased, these four okkas built their own separate ainmanes in Nangala. (Chottemanḍa and Boppanḍa okkas no longer have ainmanes in Nangala).
