Ammatanda okka

About the okka

Ammatanda (Keeda) okka in Kiggal believe that their Karanachi might have been an Amma Kodavathi, hence the okka was named ammatanda

One of their ancestors helped the Raja in a war. In appreciation, the Raja asked him what he wanted “Paka bonḍuva, Theka bonḍuva”, that is ‘land in Paka or wetland that gets flooded’. The ancestor chose Paka, and the Raja gave him umbali land in Paka (Hakathur). His bhaga, Ammatanḍa-2, went there and built an ainmane. They took the Chamunḍi moga with them for courage. There is no theeke observed between the two bhagas, but they join to field a hockey team for the Inter-okka hockey tournament.

Ainmane

They had two ainmanes in kiggal- a mek mane and keeda mane. The members split because of quarrels between two brothers. The younger brother came away and built this keeda mane. Although they did not get together for some years, they now join in this ainmane for all functions. The mek mane is now a private house, and is kept locked.

A Lingayath princess married one of their ancestors who was in the King’s army. The couple had no children. The kall kaimada was built in her name over her grave, and therefore no liquor, meat or fish is taken inside the kaimada.
