Thambutt

Thambutt is a speciality made with bananas, thambutt powder, coconut and sesame seed for Puthari.  The most essential part of this dish is the Thambutt powder or podi as we call it. Puthari is the annual rice harvest festival, usually falls towards the end of Novemeber or early December and is celebrated amongst Kodavas.

Ingredients for Thambutt Podi

For Thambutt powder

Par boiled rice -100gms

Cardamom seeds – 1/4tsp

Fenugreek seeds –1/4tsp

Roast Par boiled rice, cardamom seeds and fenugreek seeds on a medium flame till it turns dark brown. Let it cool completely before you grind it into fine powder.

Ingredients: 

Bananas – 6-7

Thambutt powder- 6 tsp or more

Sugar/honey as required

Sesame seed – 3tsp roasted

Grated coconut – 5-6 tbsp

Pinch of salt

Ghee for serving

Method:

Peel and mash the bananas using a fork.

Add the thambutt powder, salt, sugar and combine well. Add grated coconut and sesame seeds to the mixture. Keep some aside for garnishing.

Garnish with the remaining coconut and sesame seeds and top it with melted Ghee.
