Bollanda okka
About the Okka
Bollanda okka is based in Kaikad. Kuḍi beeră Aiyappa, the karanava of the okka, was accidentally shot by Chermandanḍa Bopiah during a hunt. Aiyappa had seen the footprints of a kaḍama (large kind of deer) when he had gone grazing his cattle on the banks of the Kaveri river. The following day he went on a hunt with the villagers in the Kūvalé kaaḍ forest near the ainmane. During the hunt, Chermandanḍa Bopiah saw some kuvale leaves shake, and shot at the spot, thinking it was a kadama, and accidentally hit Aiyappa.
The okka split into two bhagas (muri keethith) BoỊỊanḍa -1 and BoỊỊanḍa -2 because of a quarrel between members of the okka. It is said that BoỊỊanḍa -2 in Kaikaḍ separated 80 years ago (four generations ago) because they were insulted when this bhaga built the kaimada without consulting them.
BoỊỊanḍa -2 now has a private house where only one family lives. The two branches have a common karanava and the annual karana there is held alternately in their two houses. They have a common thutengala, but do not observe mutual pole-thale.
