Mukatira Darshan Aiyappa

Mukatira Darshan Aiyappa is a distinguished Kodava sportsperson who represented Karnataka and India at the national and international levels. Born on 5 April 1989, Aiyappa went on to build an impressive career in Indian hockey, earning medals at the Senior Nationals, representing teams in the Hockey India League, and receiving several prestigious awards, including the Ekalavya Award.

Early Life and Introduction to Hockey

Darshan Aiyappa was introduced to hockey almost by chance. Until his school years, he primarily played cricket and basketball. His sporting journey took a decisive turn when his parents gifted him a hockey stick after he secured a rank in Class 7.

The new sport quickly became his passion. He subsequently joined the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Sports Hostel, where his talent developed and opened the way for selection to the Karnataka State hockey team.

Education

• Schooling at St. Joseph’s College, Bengaluru, in 2005.
• Bachelor of Arts (BA) from St. Joseph’s Arts and Science College, Bengaluru, in 2010.

Hockey Career

His Senior Nationals record included:

• 2011 – Silver Medal, Senior Nationals
• 2012 – Bronze Medal, Senior Nationals
• 2013 – Bronze Medal, Senior Nationals
• 2014 – Silver Medal, Senior Nationals

He also represented India in the Asian Champions Trophy in Doha, Qatar, where the Indian team won the silver medal.

Over the course of his career, Aiyappa participated in several major national tournaments, including the Surjit Memorial Tournament, Beighton Cup, Ranjit Singh Tournament, MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup, Tej Bahadur Tournament, Abadulla CM Cup and Bangalore Cup.

He won a silver medal at the Bombay Gold Cup in 2015–16.

His HIL career included:

• HIL Season 1 – Mumbai Magicians
• HIL Season 2 – Mumbai Magicians
• HIL Season 3 – Ranchi Rays — Gold Medal
• HIL Season 4 – Punjab Warriors — Gold Medal

He was also selected by renowned Australian coach Ric Charlesworth, regarded as one of the world’s leading hockey coaches, to be part of the Mumbai Marines team.
