Feathers are the epidermal growths on birds and other species which forms a soft covering on its body; helps in maintaining body temperature. They cover most parts of the body of birds and provide thermal insulation, flying and waterproofing.

The feathers in the tail and wings play an important role in controlling the fight. Melanin pigmentation, which is often involved in the absorption of light are found in most of the feather. The wear and tear that occurs on the bird’s feather is replaced periodically during molting.

Feather play an significant role in trapping heat and are sometimes used in bedding, mattress, blankets, winter clothing, sleeping bags, quill pens etc., few birds feather have great religious, cultural and spiritual values.

Feathers have different shapes depending on what they are used. Down feathers are small and fluffy, contour feathers are longer and stiffer, flight feathers are the longest and toughest feathers which provides power to the bird while flying.
