Lieutenant General Codanda Poovaiah Cariappa, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC is a retired senior officer of the Indian Army . He served for nearly four decades in the Army and held a number of important operational, instructional and strategic appointments, including command of the Indian Army’s I Corps (1 Strike Corps) and service as Military Secretary to the President of India.
He later served as the Master General Sustenance (MGS) and Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of Army Staff, overseeing major aspects of logistics, procurement and maintenance for the Indian Army. He also served as Colonel of the Regiment of the Rajputana Rifles, one of the Indian Army’s oldest rifle regiments
Early life and education
Codanda Poovaiah Cariappa was born in Somwarpet, Kodagu, Karnataka, and spent part of his early childhood in Madapur in Kodagu. He was educated at Bangalore Military School before entering the National Defence Academy (NDA) and subsequently the Indian Military Academy (IMA).
He later attended the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and completed the Higher Command Course at the Army War College. He also undertook advanced strategic studies at the United States Army War College, where he completed a master’s-level programme in strategic studies. He attended the United Nations Senior Mission Leaders’ Course in Beijing, China.
Military career
Cariappa was commissioned into the 4th Battalion, Rajputana Rifles on 9 June 1984. During his career, he served in a wide range of operational environments, including deserts, mountains and plains. He developed expertise in manoeuvre warfare, counter-terrorism and operational art and held command and staff appointments at different levels of the Army.
His appointments included service as a commando instructor, Brigade Major, staff officer in the Military Secretary’s Branch, faculty and instructional appointments at the Infantry School, and senior appointments dealing with infantry operations, strategic planning, doctrine and military administration.
He commanded an infantry brigade and subsequently a mountain division in the Kargil sector. He also served with United Nations peacekeeping missions in Mozambique and the Iraq–Kuwait region.
Military Secretary to the President
One of the significant appointments of his career was as Military Secretary to the President of India, a position he held from 2018 to 2020.
The President of India’s Digital Library records him in the official capacity of former Military Secretary to the President.
Commander, I Corps
On 3 April 2020, Lieutenant General Cariappa assumed command of the I Corps, headquartered at Mathura. I Corps is one of the Indian Army’s principal strike formations. At the time of his appointment, he was described as having extensive experience in operational and strategic matters, including mountain warfare, counter-terrorism and operational planning.
He commanded I Corps until April 2021.
Master General Sustenance
In April 2021, Cariappa took over as the Master General Sustenance (MGS) of the Indian Army.
The MGS branch is responsible for ensuring the Army’s logistical sustenance, including the procurement and maintenance of ammunition, clothing, general stores, vehicles, equipment and other war-fighting requirements. In this role, he was also associated with major reforms concerning defence logistics and the corporatisation of the Ordnance Factories. His responsibilities included overseeing substantial procurement and maintenance activities for the Army.His work in this field coincided with the broader Make in India initiative and efforts to modernise India’s defence production and procurement systems.
Colonel of the Rajputana Rifles
Lieutenant General Cariappa also served as Colonel of the Regiment of the Rajputana Rifles.The Rajputana Rifles is one of the oldest rifle regiments of the Indian Army. Cariappa was commissioned into its 4th Battalion in 1984 and subsequently returned to the regiment in the senior ceremonial and regimental appointment of Colonel of the Regiment.During his tenure, he participated in regimental events and ceremonies, including the felicitation of Olympic and international sporting achievers serving with the regiment.

Lieutenant General Cariappa has received several of India’s senior military service decorations.The Government of India’s official records list him as a recipient of:

International experience
He attended advanced strategic studies at the United States Army War College and completed the United Nations Senior Mission Leaders’ Course in Beijing. His career also included service in United Nations peacekeeping environments in Africa and West Asia.
This combination of operational command, strategic studies and international experience contributed to his later responsibilities in military planning, logistics and defence policy.
Contribution to defence administration
Beyond field command, Cariappa’s career included substantial responsibilities in defence logistics, procurement, strategic planning, doctrine and human-resource development.
As Master General Sustenance, he was responsible for systems supporting the operational readiness of a force of approximately 1.2 million personnel. His later professional profile also records experience in large-scale defence procurement and budget management.His career therefore extended from tactical command at the battalion level to strategic responsibilities at the highest levels of the Indian Army.
Later career
After retiring from active military service, Lieutenant General Cariappa continued to contribute to the defence and corporate sectors.
In September 2024, he was appointed an Independent Director of AXISCADES Technologies Limited, where his experience in defence operations, strategic planning, leadership and aerospace and defence was recognised as relevant to the company’s activities.
