Deenabandhu Charitable Trust ( also Known as Kodava Deenabandhu Charitable Trust )

About

The story of the Kodava Deenabandhu Charitable Trust began in 1996, not in a boardroom, but with the suffering of an elderly Kodavathi. An elderly widow, neglected by her relatives, was found living in extreme poverty in Mysuru. She was also suffering from cancer and needed financial assistance for treatment. When the matter was brought to the attention of Col. (Retd.) Pattamada C. Ganapathy by Dr. Latha Muthanna, a group of Kodavas came together to help her. A sum of money was collected for her treatment. Sadly, she passed away following surgery.

Pathway

Over the years, education became one of the Trust’s principal areas of work. Scholarships have supported students from different parts of Kodagu, including children from economically disadvantaged families, orphans, children of single parents and those whose parents were seriously ill. The Trust has also created numerous memorial and endowment scholarships, allowing families and philanthropists to support education in memory of their loved ones.

Its work has gradually expanded beyond scholarships and medical aid. The Trust has provided assistance with hospital and educational admissions, career guidance, job searches and other personal challenges. It has also conducted Spoorthi, a motivational and career-awareness programme for young people.

The organisation’s model is simple: contributions from philanthropists are built into a corpus, with the income generated being used to support those who need assistance. Its newsletters record the continuing contribution of donors and the establishment of scholarships in memory of parents, relatives and community members.
