Major General Kuppanda Ponappa Nanjappa

Major General Kuppanda Ponappa Nanjappa, also known as Kuppanda P. Jaya Nanjappa and Jaya, was an officer of the Indian Army and a recipient of the Vir Chakra  for gallantry during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. He served with the Kumaon Regiment and later rose to the rank of Major General. He was also a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) for distinguished service.

Military career

Nanjappa joined the Indian Army and was commissioned into the Kumaon Regiment.

During his military career, Nanjappa held increasingly senior appointments and eventually attained the rank of Major General.

Indo-Pakistani War of 1971

Nanjappa distinguished himself during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.

Nanjappa led his troops during the assault and, displayed personal courage while under enemy fire. The operation was successfully completed, and he was subsequently awarded the Vir Chakra, India’s wartime gallantry decoration awarded for acts of bravery in the presence of the enemy.

Battle of Daudkandi

Participated in the Battle of Daudkandi,part of the Indian Army’s operations in the eastern theatre during the 1971 war.

Vir Chakra

Nanjappa received the Vir Chakra for his actions during the 1971 war.

Ati Vishisht Seva Medal

Nanjappa was also a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM).
