A Century of Community, Culture and Collective Endeavour
The history of the Kodava Samaja, Bengaluru is closely intertwined with the story of the Kodava community’s migration to and settlement in Bengaluru. What began in 1911 as a small association of a handful of Kodava families eventually grew into one of the community’s most important social, cultural, educational and welfare institutions.
For more than a century, the Samaja has provided a common platform for Kodavas living in Bengaluru to come together, celebrate their traditions, support one another and preserve their connection with Kodagu.
The Beginning – 1911
The origins of the present Kodava Samaja can be traced to 1911, when eight Kodava families, numbering around 30 people, came together to form an association known as the Coorg Association.Kodanda A. Nanjappa and Kuppanda Mudappa, D.F.O., played an important role in bringing the early Kodava community together.The first recorded gathering took place during the celebration of Kailpodu in September 1911, at the residence of Kodanda A. Nanjappa.At a time when Bengaluru was becoming an increasingly important centre for education, government service, the military and professional employment, the association gave Kodavas living away from their ancestral homeland a place to maintain their community connections.
The Early Years
Between 1911 and 1917, Kailpodu celebrations were held at the residences of prominent Kodavas in Bengaluru.By 1917, efforts were made to create a more organized community structure, including the collection of contributions from families associated with the organization.As the Kodava population in Bengaluru grew, community celebrations gradually moved beyond private residences.From 1930, Kailpodu celebrations were held at public venues including Lalbagh, Cubbon Park and the YMCA Hall.
Growing as a Community
1936 – Silver Jubilee
The Silver Jubilee of the Coorg Association was celebrated in 1936, marking 25 years of organized Kodava community life in Bengaluru.It was also around this period that the tradition of celebrating Puthari as a community festival in Bengaluru was initiated.These celebrations became important occasions for Kodavas to come together, particularly as increasing numbers of families were making Bengaluru their home.
1941–1950 – Two Associations Become One
In 1941, another Coorg Association emerged in Bengaluru, resulting in a period during which two community organizations existed.In 1950, the two associations came together and merged, creating a stronger and more unified community platform.The merger was an important milestone in the development of organized Kodava community life in the city.
A New Chapter After 1956
The reorganization of states in 1956, which resulted in the integration of Coorg State with Mysore State, brought further changes.Bengaluru increasingly became a centre of opportunity for Kodavas pursuing education, government and military service, professional careers and business.With more Kodava families settling permanently in the city, the need for a permanent community institution became increasingly important.A major development followed in the late 1950s.
The Vasanthnagar Property
In 1959–60, the Maharaja of Mysore, Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, donated one acre of land in Vasanthnagar to General Kodandera Chengappa Madappa , in recognition of his distinguished military service.General Cariappa chose to make the land available to the Kodava community for establishing a permanent community institution.Rao Bahadur Pemmanda K Monnappa, then Inspector General of Police of Mysore State and President of the association, played an important role in facilitating the process.The acquisition of the Vasanthnagar property became a defining moment in the history of the Samaja.It provided the community with something it had never previously possessed — a permanent home in Bengaluru.
From Coorg Association to Kodava Samaja
The association was formally registered in 1961.In 1962, the Coorg Association was renamed:Kodava Samaja, Bengaluru. The change represented more than a change of name. It reflected the growing identity of the organization as the principal community institution for Kodavas in Bengaluru.
Building a Home for the Community
Once the Vasanthnagar property was secured, the Kodava community came together to build its own community centre.Contributions came from Kodavas in Bengaluru, Kodagu, Mysuru and other parts of India.The construction became a collective community effort, demonstrating the tradition of community contribution and shared responsibility that has continued throughout the Samaja’s history.
1967 – The First Community Hall
In January 1967, the first Kodava Samaja Community Hall was inaugurated.On 15 January 1967, the hall hosted its first Kodava wedding.The hall soon became a focal point for weddings, festivals, meetings, cultural events and other community activities.
Expansion of the Samaja
As the community grew, the facilities of the Samaja expanded.A commercial complex was developed in 1975, providing additional resources for the institution.
In 1984, a dining hall was added, further strengthening the Samaja’s ability to host community events and functions.The Samaja was gradually evolving from a meeting place into a comprehensive community institution.
Education – Investing in Future Generations
Education became one of the important pillars of the Samaja’s activities.In 1981, the Samaja obtained a site in Indiranagar with the objective of establishing an educational institution.
1982 – Cauvery School
The Cauvery School was established in 1982, beginning with approximately 40 students.
The school subsequently expanded, with its high school section introduced in 1990.
The institution became an important part of the Samaja’s contribution to the education of younger generations.
1995 – New Community Hall
In 1995, a new modern community hall was completed at the Vasanthnagar premises.
The hall was named after India’s first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Army:Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa
The new facility further strengthened the Samaja’s role as the principal gathering place for Kodavas in Bengaluru.
Cauvery College
The Samaja continued expanding its educational initiatives.A site was acquired at Kodihalli for establishing a college.In 1996, Cauvery College began offering Pre-University and degree courses.The college later moved to its Kodihalli campus.Through Cauvery School and Cauvery College, the Samaja extended its role beyond community activities into the field of education, helping provide opportunities for future generations.
Sports and Youth Activities
Sports have traditionally occupied an important place in Kodava community life.The Samaja established the Kodava Samaja Sports & Recreation Club, creating opportunities for sporting, recreational and social activities.In 1996, the Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa State-Level Hockey Tournament was initiated.Inter-Sangha hockey competitions, shuttle badminton and other sporting activities subsequently became part of the community calendar.These activities helped strengthen the participation of younger generations while continuing the Kodava tradition of sporting excellence.
The Kodava Mela – 1997
One of the largest community gatherings organized in Bengaluru took place in 1997.The Bangalore Kodava Samaja and the Kodava Sahitya Academy jointly organized a major Kodava Mela.The event brought together more than 30,000 Kodavas, making it a significant celebration of Kodava culture and community identity.The gathering demonstrated the strength of the Kodava community outside Kodagu and the important role Bengaluru had come to play in Kodava social and cultural life.
Welfare and Community Development
Over the years, the activities of the Samaja expanded beyond cultural celebrations.

The participation of women and young people became increasingly important in the Samaja’s activities.The Women’s Council, established in the early 2000s, created a dedicated platform for women to participate in community activities and initiatives.The Youth Council provided younger Kodavas with opportunities to participate in community organization, cultural activities, sports and social initiatives.These institutions helped ensure that community life was not limited to one generation but continued to evolve with changing times.
Preserving the Kodava Language and Culture
For Kodavas living away from Kodagu, maintaining cultural traditions has always been an important challenge.The Samaja has played a significant role in keeping community traditions alive through:

2007 – Pombolak
In 2007, the Samaja launched Pombolak, a newsletter in the Kodava language.The publication contributed to the preservation and promotion of the language and provided another platform for communicating community news and cultural content.
The Centenary – 2011
In 2011, the Kodava Samaja, Bengaluru completed 100 years of its existence.The centenary was celebrated on a grand scale.Various committees and sub-committees were formed to coordinate the celebrations.A centenary logo was released on 28 January 2011, coinciding with the birthday celebrations of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa.The centenary provided an opportunity to look back at the remarkable transformation of the organization.From eight families and around 30 people in 1911, the Kodava Samaja had grown into a major community institution serving thousands of Kodavas across Bengaluru.
From Small Families to a Large Urban Community
The story of Kodava Samaja Bengaluru mirrors the transformation of the Kodava community itself. In 1911, Kodavas in Bengaluru were a relatively small group of families who gathered in one another’s homes to celebrate their festivals.Over the following decades, Bengaluru became home to thousands of Kodavas.
The community diversified across the military, civil services, education, medicine, engineering, business, law, technology, entrepreneurship and numerous other professions.Through this transformation, the Samaja provided continuity — a place where generations could return to their community, culture and traditions.
Kodava Samaja Today
Today, Kodava Samaja, Bengaluru continues to function as a major community institution and describes itself as the “Aiynemane” of Kodavas in Bengaluru.
