Muckkatira ( Kunjeri )  M Anjan Cariappa  an Eminent kodava Artist. Cartoonist. Animator. Director. Inventor. Forward Thinker.

Directed one of world’s earliest and India’s first 3D animated feature film “Alibaba” in the year 2000 with “cutting edge technologies” of those times such as motion capture, silicon graphics machines etc’. This film had very innovative concepts that could later be seen in the mainstream.

As a forward thinker

As a forward thinker, Anjan had created futuristic concepts and explored technologies that are becoming current today. Was exploring AR way back in 2006 using J2ME phones and then experimented with “interactive projections” and VR in areas such as advertising and medicine and created VR experiences for “Pain control without drugs”
Had envisioned an app similar to Pokemon Go months before Pokemon Go was launched.

Career

Anjan started his animation career as a traditional 2D animator and soon went on to lead a team of more than 2000 artists and animators to direct full length animated features. Anjan has also conceptualized and created award winning video games of various genres since the J2ME days and into iOS and Android. He is now exploring avenues in AR and VR.
Anjan’s personal motto is “Creativity without boundaries” He conducts workshops on creativity to graduate students and people in the industry.

Anjan started his animation career as a traditional 2D animator. In a few years he went on to lead a team of more than 2000 artists and animators and directed India’s first 3D animated film, “Alibaba” which was a mix of motion capture and animation. His second film was “Legend of Buddha” a 2D cel animated film . He has directed many more animation films and series including “Ninja Hattori” as overseas director. He has held senior positions as Creative Director at leading organisations. Anjan has conceptualized and created award winning video games of various genres since the J2ME days and into iOS and Android. He is now exploring avenues in AR and VR.

Early Life

Anjan Cariappa hails from Coorg, India and graduated with a 5 yr degree in Visual Communication Design (BFA) He started his career while in college doing odd jobs at advertising agencies. But heart of hearts it was animation that he wanted to explore. There weren’t many animation studios then. He had decided to be an animator while in his 4th grade in school. Such was his passion for animation. When all the kids around would be saying that they would grow up to be a pilot, doctor or an engineer like all kids even today do, he was sure what he wanted to become. All his text books would be flip books and note books filled with cartoons. In fact all his friends in class would await the release of his regular hand drawn comic books and “flicks”.

Anjan has more than 7 patents in various fields to his credit. He also has won multiple international awards in Design.

Passion

Anjan’s personal motto is “Creativity without boundaries” He conducts workshops on creativity to graduate students and people in the industry. He has been a pioneer and taken his creativity into various other fields such as automotive and road safety with his many inventions. An entrepreneur at heart, he has created many “communities” and start-ups including India’s first off road club “JeepThrills” which kick-started off roading as a sport in the country

Anjan is an avid animal lover and works for their rescue and welfare. He is a practicing vegan for the past many years.
