Kandera okka

About the Okka

Kandera okka’s ainmane in biloor has a beautiful old carved window with brass knobs in the wood-panelled wall of the verandah which was gifted by the King to their ajja who shot a tiger and was honoured with a nari mangala. Perhaps that is why the sides of the steps to the house are carved with coiled elephant trunk motifs.

Their ancestors learnt tantra and mantra in Kerala, and were clever. An ajja stole the Mari moga from the Kottageri temple by hiding it in a bamboo ponji (container made of hollow bamboo split at one end to keep embers) that was used to light their way on the last day of the festival. Therefore even now they use a bamboo ponji during the Mari festival.
