About Kapalas
They were the watchmen of the king at Nal Nad Palace. They were brought as slaves from kerala to serve the then rulers of Kodagu. The decendants visit the Balyamane’s around Nal Nad region and collect rice for their livelihood during Kakkada month. It is said that they were good at camouflage at night, painting their face black while staying awake to guard the rulers and alert them if there was someone heading to attack the ruler.
